Meaning of the Front Side of the Miraculous Medal
Mary is depicted standing upon a globe as Queen of Heaven and Earth, crushing the head of a serpent beneath her foot (Genesis 3:15). Our Blessed Mother gave the design of the Miraculous Medal to Saint Catherine Labouré in the year 1830. Supporting the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary - not to be confused with the virgin birth of Jesus - is the description of Mary's being conceived without sin, which refers to Mary's sinlessness, that is, being 'full of grace', and 'blessed among women' (Luke 1:28). The dogma of the Immaculate Conception was formally proclaimed 24 years later in 1854.
The Meaning of the Back Side of the Miraculous Medal:
Representing the whole Church are the twelve stars surrounding Mary, which refer to the Apostles and their successors, the Bishops. They also refer to the vision of St. John, in Revelation 12:1, which says 'a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars'. The cross symbolises Christ and our redemption and the bar under the cross signifies the earth. The 'M', of course, stands for Mary, and its interweaving with the cross symbolises Mary’s role in our salvation, along with her son, Jesus. This also captures her role as Mother of the Church. Representing the love of Jesus and Mary for us are the two hearts The two hearts represent the love of Jesus and Mary for us (Luke 2:35).
